Understanding Your Crush: A Self-Reflection Journey
The message, just three words long, has been sitting unsent in your drafts since Thursday night. What you want is a verdict about another person, and the part nobody says out loud is that the verdict you are chasing is not the one you actually need this week.
Casting the I Ching does not reveal someone else's private feelings. It reads your position: what you have observed, what you are ready to risk, and what step you can take in the next few days without pretending to know an answer that has not arrived yet.
A reading maps your position, not their intentions
Ask the coins whether your crush likes you and you have handed the question to the wrong instrument. A hexagram describes a situation and the forces moving inside it. It does not narrate the inside of another person's head, and the sooner you stop expecting it to, the more useful it becomes.
Changing the question before you cast changes everything you do with the answer.
Write three lines before you throw anything
Most people cast first and argue with the result afterwards, which is how a reading turns into a horoscope. Spend five minutes on paper first.
Line one: what you have observed, facts only. He walked me to the station on Tuesday. She replied within ten minutes for three days and then went quiet. No adjectives, no "he seemed," no interpretation smuggled in as detail.
Line two: what you want, written as a single sentence that begins with "I want." Not "I want to know if." Just the want.
Line three: what you would do this week if the answer were yes. Send one message. Ask one question. Suggest one coffee on a named day.
Those three lines are your real question. When you cast, hold them and ask something the cast can answer: what am I ready to risk, and what is the next honest step.
Three hexagrams that turn up when nothing has been said yet
Waiting (Hexagram 5) belongs to this stage. Its judgment ties success to sincerity and firmness, and its image is clouds rising over the sky while the superior man eats and drinks as though he had nothing else to occupy him. Read for your situation, that means the unsaid thing is not a failure.
You can hold your position without manufacturing urgency, and you can keep living your ordinary week while you wait.
The Magnetic (Hexagram 2), often called The Receptive, points at the opposite failure. Its judgment warns that the superior man who takes the initiative goes astray, while the one who follows finds his proper lord. In plain terms: if you are generating all the movement, all the messages, all the reasons to be in the same room, you have taken a role nobody offered you.
Try following for two weeks and notice what happens when you stop pushing.
Influence (Hexagram 31) does the most work on a question like yours, and it is also known as Wooing. Its image, in James Legge's translation, says: "The superior man frees his mind of preoccupation so that he is open to the influence of others." That is not a promise about your crush.
It describes the condition you need before you can read anything accurately. Preoccupation is why a kind reply looks like a signal and a slow reply looks like rejection. Clear it first, then look at what is actually in front of you.

What to do with the answer once you have it
A cast that lands on waiting means this week's action is small and social, not decisive. Send something that does not require a verdict: a link, a question about a shared plan, ten words and no confession. The reply provides more insight than any hexagram.
- Write your three lines: observed facts, the want, the step you would take this week.
- Cast once, on what you are ready to risk. Do not recast six times hoping the fifth answer changes.
- Choose one action within seven days, something a friend could watch you do.
- When you start decoding their tone, put the phone down and reread your three lines.
A cast that lands on Influence asks you to spend the week on your own preoccupation instead of on their behavior. Sleep, tell a friend the whole story out loud, write down what you are afraid of hearing. It is unglamorous and it beats another hour of analysis.
A cast that lands on The Magnetic asks you to stop steering. The hard part is not the technique. It is the stretch of days where your attention keeps inventing reasons to intervene.
Whatever comes up, attach one concrete test to it inside the week. The test is what you act on. The cast only helps you choose the test.
Ten minutes from now
Set a timer and write the three lines. Then decide whether you are casting today or on Wednesday, so you are not casting twice in one afternoon from the same restless place. Keep the paper. When you read it again in two weeks, you will learn something no single reading gives you: how your own account of the situation changed while the other person was not looking.
Does my crush like me?
That answer is theirs to give, not a book's. What a reading can do is show whether you are positioned to find out. Holding Together (Hexagram 8) puts it directly: the querent should re-examine himself before expecting others to join him. Practical version: ask one question this week that produces an answer you could act on, and treat the reply as information rather than a verdict on your worth.
Is he interested in me or just being kind?
Separate kindness that shows up everywhere from attention that clusters around you. Consistent kindness is a friend. Attention that appears only when the two of you are alone is a question worth asking.
Cautious Advance (Hexagram 10) gives the shape of the move: treading on a tiger's tail works only if the pressure stays light. Invite him to something specific and small, and notice whether he offers a counter-time when he cannot make yours.
Does anyone like me?
This one usually arrives after a long quiet stretch, and it is a question about your calendar more than your character. Pushing Upward (Hexagram 46) says not to worry about meeting the great man, and points advancement toward the south. Translate that into a schedule: three social actions in the next ten days, one of them with people you have not seen in a year.
Receiving this hexagram means the cast is pointing at frequency of contact, not at your attractiveness.
Would she be interested in me if we met?
A meeting that has not happened is the one thing a cast cannot evaluate, because there is no situation yet to read. Gradual Progress (Hexagram 53) is the hexagram for this case: its judgment attaches good fortune to a slow, correctly ordered advance rather than a leap.
Make the meeting real, low stakes, and time-limited. Forty-five minutes for coffee gives you both an exit and gives you evidence instead of another year of speculation.
The I Ching is a tool for reflection. It does not diagnose anything, it does not decide for you, and the information you need about another person comes from that person.
